Team Hawkes have included both Leebaz and Mecir in the nominations for the Scone Cup, but Mecir is set to be their sole representative in the race after John Hawkes revealed that Leebaz was set to head to Queensland to contest the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on Saturday.

Mecir had little luck during his summer campaign, but scored his maiden win at Group level with a fast-finishing victory in the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) on March 19 before finishing a slightly disappointing fourth in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on April 19.

Darley mare Wistful finished second behind Leebaz in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) at her last start and has another opportunity to record her maiden black type win at Scone on Friday and she could be joined in the field by stablemate Cameo, who beat home just a single runner in the Group 3 Darley Crown at the standalone Hawkesbury race meeting.

The Great Snowman, Iggi Pop and Full Of Spirit are also a chance of backing up from the Hawkesbury Gold Cup in the Scone Cup this weekend.

One of the most interesting runners in the 2014 Scone Cup nominations is imported galloper Prince Cheri, who has failed to fire in two race starts since returning to the races in March.

Prince Cheri stamped himself as a stayer to watch with a win in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and finished within three and a half lengths of Boban and It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on March 8 before finishing a disappointing eight in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22.

Veteran gelding Ironstein has not recorded a race win since he took out the 2011 edition of the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m), but will appreciate the step-up in distance after finishing a fair fifth first-up behind Kaypers at Royal Randwick on April 26.

The Chris Waller-trained duo of Said Com and Tromso, veteran gelding Youthful Jack, John Sargent-trained Iggi Pop, consistent stayer Destiny’s Kiss and David Payne-trained Paederos have also been included in the 2014 Scone Cup nominations.
