Cameo Produces Keen Turn of Foot to Win 2014 Scone Cup

May 16th, 2014

Outsider Cameo has produced an incredible final straight sprint to comfortably win the featured Scone Cup (1600m) this afternoon ahead of Full Of Spirit and Loaded.

Jumping from the gates only fairly, the Shamardal mare was forced to settle well within the main pack, around ten lengths off the pace of early leaders Collar, The Great Snowman and Mecir; who set a reasonable pace over the back straight and rounding the bend.

Pushed wide upon finding the final straight, Cameo quickly spooled up and found the leaders, poking nearly two lengths clear when finding the line.

Managing Director of Darley Australia, Henry Plumptre with understandably thrilled with Cameo’s performance to claim the 2014 Scone Cup and was quick to lay the praise on both mount and jockey.

“On top of the ground she’s a very good mare, this mare, and I thought young Sammy gave her a gem of a ride” Plumptre said

“She’s a good mare but not a good enough mare to overcome a wide barrier on a wet track, but everything went right today.

“We’re delighted – it’s Scone, it’s our home town, it’s where all our horses are reared; fantastic.

Apprentice jockey Sam Clipperton delivered a sensational ride on Cameo in the 2014 Scone Cup,

“Gee that’s a big thrill. The Scone Cup is a pretty prestigious race, especially on the country circuit and it’s great to be able to do it for Mr O’Shea” Clipperton said immediately after dismounting.

“I was confident she was going to put in an improved run, but whether she could beat these I wasn’t certain.

“Back on Cox Plate day she ran second to Catkins, so the form was there.

“Back on the firmer surface certainly helped and the gun barrier I was able to use; got a beautiful run, put her to sleep and she did the rest.”

Unable to finish better than 10th in any of her three races prior to the Scone Cup this preparation, Cameo is now likely to head north to Queensland to contest major events over the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, including a possible appearance in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) on May 31st.
